Blogging can be a really useful communication tool. How often should classroom blogs be updated? Would the time of year matter? Probably... a busy time of the school year may require more updates. How do parents without computer access feel a part of this techno community? Now, my school sends home paper copies to families without internet access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

ReplyDeleteI do not have a good answer for the question on how to address the issues of families without computers. I am sure it is difficult for them to fully feel like a part of the community.
ReplyDeleteI think if you are making the commiment to maintain a blog for your classroom it would have to be updated weekly. If it is not updated regularly, I fear it could appear to your readers that you are not organized.
Many parents who do not have Internet, have a smartphone, and can access a blog that way. They just need to know where to go to find the posts. You can also use Twitter for parent updates; Twitter is easy to use on a smartphone and does not require much reading, given tweets are limited o 140 characters. Tweets can also have a link to a blog post or websites. Many teachers use Twitter to keep parents updated. School superintendents and principals also use Twitter in this way.
ReplyDeleteI would establish the "technology use at home" thought with parents at Open House. You can leave out a sign in sheet with an area with parent emails, and possibly, give each parent an internet-use questionnaire about email and blogging access. I hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteI think Gi's idea is a great one! And of course most people do have smartphone-but not all of us are that savvy with it. So getting to the whole class does present a problem still. Of course there was always a problem getting to all parents even with paper copies. We have to work harder to reach all parents in this busy day and age.
